The Morrison-Shearer Foundation fulfills the shared vision of two remarkable women, each an artist in her own field.Memorial tribute to Sybil Shearer, February 5, 2006, The Art Institute of Chicago

The Foundation

The idea for the Morrison-Shearer Foundation originated in the early 1980’s when noted photographer, filmmaker, and lighting designer, Helen Balfour Morrison, and internationally recognized modern dancer-choreographer, Sybil Shearer, conceived a plan to perpetuate the legacy of their forty-year artistic collaboration as an inspiration to others. In 1991, seven years after Morrison’s death, Sybil Shearer formally established the Foundation as the realization of their shared vision, providing the document “Purpose and Aims of the Museum” to guide its direction. Over the years since Shearer’s passing in 2005, the Board of Trustees worked intensively to fulfill the vision for the Foundation laid out in this document. However, it eventually became clear that the nature and condition of the Northbrook, IL properties could not physically support the founders’ vision.

As a result, the Trustees returned to Shearer’s extensive writings for guidance so that they might carry the Foundation into the future based on the spirit of their intentions rather than a literal fulfillment of their instructions. From this work, The Morrison-Shearer Foundation has assembled the following core values that guide its work.

Our Values

CREATIVITY – EXCELLENCE – COLLABORATION – STEWARDSHIP – DIVERSITY – JOY – ART AND ARTISTS

Inspired by the generosity, artistry, and creative practice of founders Helen Balfour Morrison and Sybil Shearer, the Morrison-Shearer Foundation values the vision, personal sacrifice, and commitment that are required to achieve excellence in artistic practice. Artistic excellence is achieved through an individual’s passionate commitment to their own unique creative process fueled by joyful curiosity, integrity, rigor, open-mindedness, and a willingness to explore new and previously untried territory. We further value the unique outcomes that emerge through collaborations by those who have achieved virtuosity in their chosen forms of expression.

Today the Foundation continues to share their legacies through a variety of programs, grants, and affiliations – most especially through the Sybil Shearer Studio at Ragdale, gifted by MSF and built on the campus of the Ragdale artists’ residency in Lake Forest, Illinois. Completed in the fall of 2021, the new Studio greatly enhances dance-creation opportunities while serving as an inspiring tribute to the lives and work of Sybil and Helen.
