The Morrison-Shearer Foundation is pleased to announce that acclaimed choreographer Christopher Williams has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Sybil Shearer Fellowship Residency at Ragdale, a nonprofit artist residency program and community in Lake Forest, IL. This prestigious opportunity, which we’re proud to fund, continues our commitment to nurturing visionary dance artists.
Described by the New York Times as “one of the most exciting choreographic voices out there,” Christopher Williams (pictured below) is renowned for his unique approach to choreography, blending classical and contemporary dance with a deep exploration of mythology and puppetry. His work transcends traditional boundaries, creating performances that transport audiences to realms of magic and wonder. By supporting artists like Christopher, we’re not just funding individual creativity, we’re investing in the evolution of dance as an art form.
During his residency, Christopher will have the opportunity to immerse himself in his craft, free from the distractions of daily life. This is where the magic happens – where ideas germinate, grow, and blossom into fully-fledged artistic visions.
The Sybil Shearer Fellowship at Ragdale is a continuation of Sybil Shearer’s legacy, offering dancers and choreographers the same kind of creative retreat that was so crucial to her own artistic development. The Sybil Shearer Studio at Ragdale, with its serene setting and rich history, provides the perfect environment for artists to delve deep into their creative process.
The impact of this fellowship extends far beyond one artist or one performance. From the dancers who will embody Christopher’s choreography to the audiences who will be moved by their performances, the influence of this residency will spread far and wide.
As Christopher embarks on this residency, we encourage you to reflect on the power of artistic retreat. How might your own creativity benefit from time and space dedicated solely to your passion? Perhaps the legacies of Helen Balfour Morrison and Sybil Shearer will inspire you to carve out your own creative sanctuaries, no matter how small.
